Living Wills

It is the dread we all fear, ending up with a physical condition which the doctors tell us is incurable.

Unless we have taken some action before reaching that stage to set out firmly our wishes on how we would prefer our condition to be treated, we shall have very little say in our medical care. The doctors will do their best to alleviate our symptoms and they will often choose to try and do something when we might prefer they do little.

In a Living Will, you set out the circumstances in which the document would be looked at. These might be when suffering from appalling injury after an accident, or if suddenly faced with a disabling condition with incessant pain.

The Living Will would set out the limits of medical treatment you would want.

There is still, it must be said, doubts on how far the Courts will give effect to your expressed wishes in this way, but doctors will always be concerned to follow the treatment to which a patient consents. If consent to active medical intervention is lacking - by their considering the contents of your Living Will, for example - they may well decide to do no more than keep you comfortable and let nature takes its course.

will help you to make a Living Will by following a form of words which will assist those who care for you to follow your wishes.
